Elk Beaver Ultras 2012
Once again another Elk/Beaver Ultras successfully completed.
This "classic" early season opener for ultra-runners attracted
a talented and cheerful group of athletes.
The weather was picture perfect and the beauty of the park and
the quality of the trails was acknowledged by all
the first time competitors.
The Volunteers and timing crew were excellent, as always, and their services
were greatly appreciated.
This year, the 50K race was the Canadian Championship event on the 5 race roster.
Local "Prairie Inn Harrier" Shane Ruljancich (35y/o) was the victor in an impressive 3:25:59,
sharing the early laps with Chris Barth (41) of White Rock BC, but managed to beat him
to the line by 12 minutes, with the ultra "legend' Jim Swadling (65).
Jim's 3:51:44 also give him a Canadian AG fastest finishing for a trail 50K.
41 registered, 37 started and finished this popular event.
The 100K event was won by Edmonton based Logan Beaulieu (40) in a respectable sub ten hour finish.
Logan (the son of Moe "the eagle" Beaulieu) held off James Gardner (49) from Tofino BC, for a 15 minute
margin of victory. First place in the women's race was local runner Bonnie Reszel (44) and 4th place O/A
was Pat Banziger our youngest competitor in this tough mentally challenging 10 lapper.
6 runners started this event and 4 finished.
The 50 mile race was won by Stacey Cleveland (33) from Penticton, with an amazing time of 6:46:10 ( average pace of 5:03 per kilometres )
Becky Swan also of BC, (fellow Open Women's division) was second.
With two local lads who ran the whole way together, Steve Johns conceding Male Winner's attractive plaque to his buddy Dave Small.
They were in different age groups so they were both happy to finish first!
9 runners registered 8 started and 5 finished.
The "First Timers" Marathon was a closely contested event this year with John Blakeslee winning in a very respectable 3:39:19, giving him the
new course set last year. Katie Simpson 3:40:00 from Australia also broke the women's course record.
7 started and finished.
The lone competitor in the 25 mile walk was Susan Boyle, she finished in 6:16:36 on a less than optimal trail course for her faster racewalking
technique. She has walked a sub 3 hour 1/2 marathon.
Thank you to all the Atheletes this year and I will see you again next year.
